Sales at U.S. retailers rose 1.1% in February and arrived at an annualized rate of 407,800 million dollars, the highest in five months, said the Department of Commerce.

The government adjusted its figures for January today indicating that the increase in retail sales that month was 0.6%, two tenths of a percentage point higher than in the initial report.

Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales in February rose 0.9%.

The retail sales are an important indicator of U.S. economic outlook, a country where consumer spending amounts to nearly 70% of economic activity.
