The Iranian navy releases a Chinese cargo ship abducted by Somali pirates
Iran’s Navy yesterday released the 28 crew of a freighter owned by a shipping company China in international waters south of the Iranian port city of Bandar Yask and arrested nine Somali pirates who hijacked the ship, reported the local agency Fars.
“The Chinese ship is released ‘Xianghuamen’, with 28 crew on board flag of convenience of Panama,” the agency said Izadian Said, deputy head of the Maritime and Ports Organization of Iran.
The ship was hijacked yesterday morning by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Oman, not far from the Iranian port city of Chabahar and Bandar Yask, the source said.
“The pirates seized the ship in international waters about 45 miles Yask Bandar waters, and, after several successful operations, the Navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran managed to free him and stop to nine pirates, “said Izadian.
The Merchant released, the official said the Iranian Maritime Organization, and ironware was his way of Imam Khomeini port in southern Iran.
The Iranian Navy began operations against Somali piracy in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden in 2008 after the kidnapping of the freighter “MV Delight”, hired by Iran.
Since about seven years ago Somali pirates have increased their activities, increasingly act together with improved navigation and weapons and further away from their home ports, as on this occasion, near the coast of Iran.
Warships from more than thirty countries patrol the waters of the area around Somalia to try to prevent the actions of pirates in the area, which has some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
