Hillary Clinton Says that Russia Can Contribute to a “Civil War” in Syria

| May 31, 2012

The Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said today in Copenhagen that Russian opposition to military intervention in Syria can help you have a civil war in that country.

Russia says it wants to avoid a civil war in Syria. I say that his policies will help to have a civil war,” Clinton said today in a meeting with Danish students, the agency Ritzau.

Clinton pointed to Russia, ahead of China as the main opposition to a possible UN intervention in Syria.

Unlike the case of Libya, the disagreement between the great powers is preventing intervention in Syria, Clinton lamented.

“It’s a dilemma how to intervene without costing more lives and suffering. The killing of innocent people must stop, but Russia and China we make it very difficult”, according to Clinton.

Clinton is on tour in Scandinavia, where he will hold several high-level political meetings in Denmark, on Thursday before traveling to Norway and then visit Sweden, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey.
