Fundamental research of a business involves analyzing its finance statements and health, its management and competitive advantages , and its rivals and markets. When applied to futures and foreign exchange, it concentrates on the final state of the economy, IRs, production, revenues, and management. When investigating a stock, futures contract, or currency using fundamental research there are 2 basic approaches one can use ; bottom up research and top down research.

The term is used to distinguish such research from other kinds of investment research , for example quantitative research and technical research. Fundamental criteria is performed on historic and present information, but with the objective of making fiscal predictions.

There are many possible objectives : * to conduct a company stock valuation and foretell its possible price evolution, * to make a projection on its business performance, * to guage its management and make internal business choices, * to work out its credit risk.
