UPDATE 1-Mexico Jan auto output leaps 102.4 pct vs year ago

(Adds unit production numbers, background) MEXICO CITY, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Mexican auto production rose in January for the third straight month as the economy recovered from a severe downturn due to the U.S. recession, an industry group said on Monday. The Mexican Automotive Industry Association, or AMIA, said output rose 102.4 percent on an annual basis to 165,058 vehicles last month compared to 81,533 in January 2009. January exports more than doubled to 114,193 vehicles compared with 51,061 in the same month last year, soaring 123.6 percent. Automobiles and auto parts represent around one-fifth of Mexico's manufactured exports, most of which are sold in the United States. Local auto output plummeted early last year as the U.S. downturn dragged Mexico into its deepest recession since the 1930s.
