Car hits three blind pedestrians in Denver, killing one

DENVER (BestGrowthStock) – A suburban Denver motorist lost control of her vehicle on Friday and plowed into three blind people, killing one and seriously injuring the other two as they waited for a bus to take them to a holiday party.

David Nanney, 47, was killed and two unidentified women, one 18 and the other, 26, remain hospitalized after undergoing surgery, said Lt. Sean Dugan, spokesman for the Littleton, Colorado police department.

The 21-year-old driver, whose name hasn’t been released, swerved into the trio as they waited at a bus stop during the morning commute, Dugan said. Roads around the Denver metropolitan area were wet with icy patches after a light snowfall Thursday night.

The three were waiting for a bus to take them to a holiday party at the Colorado Center For the Blind, where all three were adult learners, Julie Deden, the center’s executive director, said in a statement.

“We are first and foremost a family and we will love and support one another through this great tragedy which has struck us at a time of year normally reserved for joy and celebration,” Deden said.

The driver was given a mandatory blood test and the investigation is ongoing, but nothing about the incident leads police to believe it was anything other than an accident.

Dugan said an eyewitness reported that the accident happened so fast that the three blind people could not have avoided the car even if they had been able to see.

“They didn’t have a lot of time to get out of the way, and they were all high-functioning people,” Dugan said.
