China says Korea conflict must be avoided

BEIJING (BestGrowthStock) – China renewed its call for talks to defuse tensions on the Korean peninsula on Monday after South Korea held live-firing drills near its disputed maritime border with North Korea.

“Nobody has the right to incite or provoke conflict or war, and nobody has the right to make the people on both sides of the Korean peninsula shed their blood,” Cui told a small news conference with Australian officials in Beijing when asked for Beijing’s reaction to the South Korean drill.

“China has always unwaveringly maintained that peace and stability must be maintained on the (Korean) peninsula,” he said. “No matter what the differences and disputes, only dialogue and negotiations can resolve them, and not conflict and war.”

The United Nations Security Council met on Sunday to try to calm Korean tensions, but its meeting ended without agreement, with China and Russia resisting blaming North Korea. They have also voiced misgivings about South Korea’s military drill.
