Climate deal makes bigger EU CO2 cut more likely: UK

CANCUN, Mexico (BestGrowthStock) – A climate deal in Mexico on Saturday would make it more likely that the European Union would shift to a tougher greenhouse gas emissions target, Britain’s energy and climate secretary said.

The EU has previously said that it would move to a 30 percent cut in greenhouse gases by 2020, compared with 1990 levels, from a 20 percent target now if the rest of the world took tougher action to fight climate change.

“I think it definitely makes an agreement on 30 percent in the EU more likely,” Chris Huhne told reporters, mentioning the support of Denmark, France and other EU countries.

“We were making lots of progress on that anyway. I think we’ll have some other big member states stating that they’re prepared to back this move to 30 percent.”
