Female boxer Christy Martin hospitalized after attack

ORLANDO, Florida (BestGrowthStock) – Christy Martin, a well known female boxer who became a media star after a bloody 1996 match in Las Vegas that was televised to 30 million homes, was hospitalized after allegedly being stabbed and shot by her husband, police said on Wednesday.

According to the police incident report, Martin, 42, returned to her home in the community of Apopka on Tuesday afternoon after being away for two days and was attacked by her husband, Jim Martin, with a knife and handgun.

Christy Martin left the house and flagged down a passing motorist who drove her to the hospital. Martin was conscious and able to tell investigators what happened, police said. Her medical condition was not immediately known.

Jim Martin, 66, is being sought by police as the suspect in the attempted murder of his wife, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Martin was his wife’s first trainer at the start of her career in 1991, and her manager, according to her website.

A 5-foot 4-inch junior welterweight, Martin fought on the undercard of the 1997 Mike Tyson/Evander Holyfield rematch in Las Vegas in which Tyson bit off part of Holyfield’s ear.

Martin became a media star through a bloody nose she was given in a March 1996 match with Irish fighter Deirdre Gogarty. That unanimous six-round decision in Las Vegas won Martin the World Boxing Council women’s lightweight championship.

Martin won a match as recently as September 2009 in Syracuse, N.Y. against Dakota Stone.
