Georgia meth bust one of biggest ever: police

ATLANTA (BestGrowthStock) – Police seized nearly half a ton of the drug methamphetamine in a raid on a home in suburban Atlanta in what they said on Tuesday was one of the biggest such finds in U.S. history.

Police uncovered the lab and 983 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $44 million in the raid on Monday night on a home in a quiet neighborhood of Gwinnett County, north of Atlanta, they said.

The home “was being strictly used for the production of methamphetamine” Gwinnett County police said in a statement, adding: “This is believed to be one of the largest methamphetamine confiscations in the United States.”

Jose Galvez-Vela, 33, of Weslaco, Texas has been arrested and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, police said.

Methamphetamine, which is called by the street names of “speed,” “crystal,” “crank,” is an addictive stimulant frequently produced in home laboratories. It can be swallowed in pills, snorted, injected or smoked.
