Is It Possible to Save Money on the Cost of Healthcare?

It will come as no surprise to many to hear that the Affordable Care Act failed. Sometimes referred to as Obamacare, there is no denying the fact that healthcare is no cheaper today than it was eight years ago. Consumers are still looking for ways to save money on the cost of healthcare while things may, or may not, get sorted out under a new POTUS. The question you are probably asking may even be, “Is it even possible to save money on the cost of healthcare?” The short answer is yes, it is quite possible. The long answer involves finding ways to save a dollar here and there.

Do You Really Need that Name Brand Prescription Drug?

While it stands to reason that drugs meant to cure diseases will be extremely expensive, some name-brand drugs are ten times what a generic would cost. To make matters worse, there are some pharmaceuticals which still carry the patent and are not yet available in generic form. You may be able to save money on the cost of prescriptions if your doctor can find another medication that works in the same way, but has a generic counterpart.

One drug that comes to mind is used for the treatment of nausea caused by chemotherapy. Zofran is extremely expensive and while it has been available as a generic, Ondansetron, since 2007, the name brand is over $200 while the generic can be had for under $15. That’s a huge saving!

Alternative Medicines

Speaking of nausea, there are a great number of alternative treatments for nausea, but most are not effective for use with chemo patients. Cannabis with high levels of CBD, however, has been widely accepted as an anti-nausea medication and can be much, much less expensive than Zofran, for instance.

You can find cannabis with high levels of CBDs at your local dispensary in several forms. Sometimes, you can find a tincture, which is placed as a drop or two under the tongue and other times you can find delicious edibles such as lollipops, candy, and brownies. Some dispensaries carry medicinal cupcakes and even soups and other types of edibles new to the edible market.

Learning to Stay Healthy

Of course, the best way possible to save money on healthcare is to find ways to avoid getting sick. Whether you embark on a low-fat, low-carb diet or simply get your flu shot every year, the best way to avoid the high cost of healthcare is to avoid getting sick in the first place.

Some insurance companies also pay for services that are geared towards learning to live healthy lifestyles. Some providers will pay for tobacco cessation product and therapy while others will pay for chiropractic adjustments to avoid back pain and others will offer classes on nutrition and exercise. Few people go through life without the occasional cold or flu, but a healthy diet, plenty of rest, and cardio exercise will help you stay in the best health possible. Looking to save money on healthcare? Don’t get sick!
