Japan backs Seoul taking North to U.N. Security Council

TOKYO (BestGrowthStock) – Japan said on Monday that it backed South Korea’s decision to take Pyongyang to the U.N. Security Council for sinking a South Korean naval ship.

“I’m not sure about taking the lead, but I think we would strongly support (South Korea),” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano told a news conference after South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said Seoul would take the North to the U.N. decision-making body.

“Of course, the prerequisite for this would be close cooperation between Japan, the United States and South Korea,” Hirano added. “And if that takes place, we would like to play a role, if given the chance, in getting China to recognize that it is in the same situation.”

South Korea accused the North last week of torpedoing one of its warships, heightening regional tension and testing the international position of China, Pyongyang’s only major backer. Pyongyang has denied the accusation.

Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said last week that Japan should “be at the forefront” if Seoul sought a U.N. Security Council resolution against North Korea.
