Japan’s Mitsui not considering buying Woodside stake

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co (8031.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is not considering acquiring Royal Dutch Shell’s (RDSa.L: Quote, Profile, Research) stake in Australia’s biggest oil and gas firm, Woodside Petroleum (WPL.AX: Quote, Profile, Research), a Mitsui spokesman said on Monday.

The Australian Financial Review said on Monday that there was speculation that Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L: Quote, Profile, Research) is considering selling its 24 percent stake in Woodside to Mitsui and Mitsubishi as an alternative plan to possibly selling the stake to BHP Billiton (BHP.AX: Quote, Profile, Research)(BLT.L: Quote, Profile, Research).

Mitsubishi was not immediately available for comment.
