Koran-burning plan is an attack on Islam: reports

DUBAI (BestGrowthStock) – A threat by a U.S. pastor to commemorate the September 11 attacks by burning copies of the Koran is an attack on Islam and a deliberate attempt to infuriate Muslims, Gulf Arab newspapers said.

“This is an attack on Islam, an attack against Muslims,” the English-language Saudi newspaper Arab News said in an editorial.

“And it is an attack against God – because the Holy Koran is the Word of God. Muslims cannot see it any other way.

Comments by two leading Gulf Arab newspapers came in response to Terry Jones’ announcement that he would burn copies of the Islamic holy book on Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington that killed almost 3,000 people.

Jones, the leader of a small Protestant church with about 30 members in Gainesville, Florida, moved his position on Friday and said he now did not plan to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary, but he appeared to leave open the possibility he could change his mind.

“It is Satanic a sin of the worst kind because it is a deliberate one. That makes it far more than an act of ignorant stupidity,” the Arab News said.

Arab News said increased attacks on U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Iraq are likely as a result, while Muslims too may die as authorities struggle to contain the violent response.

In the United Arab Emirates, the daily Gulf News said that while it was an attempt to infuriate the Muslim world, it noted the positive response from mainstream local religious leaders.

“This spirit of tolerance and religious spirituality is what the world needs – not an ignorant bigot being allowed to indulge his hatred,” the newspaper said.
