Man presumed dead after Florida mine collapse

MIAMI (BestGrowthStock) – Rescuers worked on Thursday to recover the body of an employee at a central Florida mine who is presumed dead after an open pit water-filled gravel mine collapsed.

Emergency officials used a boat to search an area at the Mazak limestone mine in Florida’s Sumter County where the worker was last seen but saw no signs he survived, said Sumter County Fire Chief William Gulbrandsen.

“We’ve moved from a rescue effort to a recovery effort,” he told Reuters.

The man had been inspecting the site of a controlled blast at the mine, which produces rock and aggregate, when the shoreline of the water-filled mine pit collapsed, trapping him, Gulbrandsen said.

Rescuers plan to work through the night to stabilize and then dredge the area where the man went missing in the hopes of recovering the body, he said.
