March power demand falls in Tokyo Elec, Tohoku Elec areas

TOKYO, April 4 (Reuters) – Electricity demand in areas
covered by Tokyo Electric Power Co fell 9.2 percent in
March from a year earlier, Reuters calculations based on
industry data from the Electric Power System Council of Japan
showed on Monday.

The grid association’s data also reflects power demand for
independent power producers in the same area.

Tokyo Electric, which accounts about a third of total power
sales in Japan, imposed a rolling blackout last month after the
March 11 earthquake and tsunami caused shutdowns of its power
facilities, including two nuclear plants.

Tohoku Electric Power Co covers areas the quake and
the tsunami damaged most.
