NY’s Cuomo announces candidacy for governor

NEW YORK, May 22 (BestGrowthStock) – New York state Attorney
General Andrew Cuomo, who has already amassed a large campaign
war chest, announced his candidacy for governor on Saturday in
a video posted on the Internet.

Cuomo called New York’s state government “disreputable and
discredited” and “a national disgrace,” and said he will seek
new ethics laws and independent monitors for Albany.

The announcement by the son of former Governor Mario Cuomo
had been expected for months and he is virtually unopposed for
the Democratic nomination.

Governor David Paterson, enmeshed in scandal and under
investigation, pulled out of the race during the winter. The
former lieutenant-governor stepped into the top executive’s job
in 2008 after Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned due to a
prostitution scandal. Both Paterson and Spitzer are also
Democrats.

In the 21-minute video on his website, Cuomo said he
supports abortion rights, charter schools, gay marriage and
Wall Street regulation, and opposes the death penalty.

“I am fiscally prudent and socially progressive,” he said.

Cuomo criticized Wall Street, saying that “reckless bankers
exploit the economy” at the expense of working families.

He said he will seek a freeze on state taxes and a cap on
state spending. “Raising taxes is just not an option.”

Saying that “mine is a much different approach to state
government,” Cuomo also promised to take a bipartisan approach
in Albany and to work with “reasonable” Democrats, Republicans
and independents.

Democrats will hold their state convention next week.

Cuomo is to make a public announcement at a campaign event
in New York City on Saturday.
