Only suspicious packages in UK, Dubai: U.S. official

WASHINGTON (BestGrowthStock) – The only suspicious packages that the U.S. government knows about are in Dubai and Britain, a U.S. official said on Friday, as a second U.S. official described U.S. searches underway as precautionary.

FedEx Corp. confiscated earlier on Friday a suspicious package at its Dubai facility that originated in Yemen. British police said items found on a U.S.-registered cargo plane at an airport about 160 miles north of London had been sent for further testing.

The first official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) would be at the top of the list of suspects, if terrorism links are confirmed.

The official said intelligence on the possible plot had come from an ally abroad, without elaborating.

“If there is a nexus of terrorism then AQAP would have to be at the top of the list of suspects,” the official said.

AQAP and one of its leading figures — American-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki — increasingly have become priority U.S. targets since the group took responsibility for a failed plot to blow up a U.S. passenger jet on Christmas Day last year.
