Portugal union says general strike is largest ever

LISBON, Nov 24 (BestGrowthStock) – Portugal’s general strike against
austerity, the first organized jointly by the country’s two main
unions since 1988, is the largest stoppage ever in the country,
head of the UGT umbrella union said on Wednesday.

“It is a bigger strike than the one in 1988,” Joao Proenca
told a briefing on the strike’s impact in the early afternoon.
The one-day strike began at midnight. “We consider it to be the
biggest strike ever,” he said.

The country’s largest union, the CGTP, earlier said the
worker participation was above 75 percent and expected the
figure to rise during the day.

The government would not immediatley provide estimates for
the participation, saying only that the private sector was
little affected.
