LONDON, April 8 (Reuters) – Gold prices hit record highs and
silver prices their strongest in 31 years, as the dollar slid to
15-month lows against the euro, with simmering concerns over
inflation and unrest in the Middle East also fuelling buying.

PRICES
* Spot gold (XAU=: Quote, Profile, Research) was at $1,466.40 an ounce at 0630 GMT
compared with $1,457.45 late in New York on Thursday.

* Silver (XAG=: Quote, Profile, Research) was at $40.09 from $39.51.

* Platinum (XPT=: Quote, Profile, Research) at $1,797.50 from $1,781.10.

* Palladium (XPD=: Quote, Profile, Research) at $784.97 from $775.03.

DATA/EVENTS

* U.S. wholesale inventories for February, 1400 GMT.

* U.S. Economic Cycle Research Institute (ECRI) releases its
weekly index of economic activity for April 1, 1430 GMT.

* U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Dennis
Lockhart speaks on the economic outlook, monetary policy before
an economics forum at the University of Tennessee, 1200 GMT.

MARKET NEWS

* The dollar weakened against the euro, with the single
currency touching a 15-month high against the dollar after
dipping the previous day in a sell-the-fact type of reaction to
a widely-expected rate rise by the European Central Bank. [FRX/]

* Oil climbed to its highest level in 2-1/2 years as supply
cuts stemming from attacks on Libyan oil fields offset demand
concerns spurred by a major aftershock in Japan. [O/R]

* Asian shares rose by up to 0.7 percent as it appeared a
strong aftershock that struck Japan’s earthquake-ravaged
northeast late Thursday had not done major damage. [MKTS/GLOB]

* European stock index futures pointed to a higher open on
Friday with a rally in metals seen helping miners, and as risk

FUNDAMENTALS

* The world’s largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, the
SPDR Gold Trust (GLD: Quote, Profile, Research), said its holdings rose to 1,217.209
tonnes, their highest since mid-March, on Thursday. [GOL/SPDR]

* The world’s largest silver-backed ETF, the iShares Silver
Trust (SLV.P: Quote, Profile, Research), said its holdings hit another record at 11,192.80

* India’s gold futures are likely to edge higher, tailing
overseas markets which hit a record high in early trade, but the
strengthening rupee may restrict the upside, analysts said.

TECHNICALS

* Gold support at $1,453, resistance at $1,500, 14-day RSI
at 79.9.

* Silver support at $39.27, resistance at $48.00, 14-day RSI
at 89.2.

* Platinum support at $1,770, resistance at $1,808, 14-day
RSI at 67.4.
