WHAT: Mexico retail sales for December; January trade
balance

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 9:00 a.m. (1500 GMT)

REUTERS FORECAST RETAIL SALES: Median -0.2 percent y/y Dec
of 13 analysts with six predicting a positive number and seven
expecting a contraction.

REUTERS FORECAST TRADE BALANCE: Median -$560 million among
13 analysts and a range of -$1.55 billion to +$200 million.

FACTORS TO WATCH: Mexican retail sales are expected to have
fallen slightly in December for the 16th straight monthly
decline, lagging a slow recovery in the employment sector.

However, analysts were nearly divided on whether retail
sales would climb or fall, with estimates ranging from -1.2 to
+4.7.

Mexico’s trade deficit is expected to have widened in
January – the third consecutive increase – as manufacturing
exports continue to trail behind imports.
