PREVIEW-Mexico Jan retail sales seen up 2.0 pct yr/yr

WHAT: Mexico January retail sales

WHEN: Monday, March 22 at 9:00 a.m. (1500 GMT)

REUTERS FORECAST RETAIL SALES: Median estimate of 2.0
percent growth year-on-year in January according to 12 analysts
with one predicting a decline of 0.5 percent and the others
expecting a rise.

FACTORS TO WATCH: Mexican retail sales are expected to have
climbed in January and so continued to reverse a trend of 15
consecutive declines that was broken in December. Retail sales
have been climbing unevenly month-over-month since May, when
they touched a low not seen since mid-2005.

If the sales figure does not meet analysts’ expectations or
is negative, it will cast doubt about Mexico’s nascent economic
recovery.
