Second runway at UK’s Heathrow airport reopens

LONDON (BestGrowthStock) – The second runway at London’s Heathrow airport, which had been closed since the weekend due to poor weather leading to cancellations and delays to services, has reopened, the airport operator said on Tuesday.

“It has just reopened,” said a spokeswoman for BAA, owned by Spain’s Ferrovial. The closure of the south runway at the world’s busiest international airport had significantly reduced capacity.

The spokeswoman said although the airport was now fully up and running, it would take time for all services to be resume and warned passengers to check with airlines first.

“We are trying to get it back to normal as quickly as we can,” she said. “We don’t want news that the runway is open to cause a mass exodus to Heathrow.”

Many passengers have been forced to camp at departure halls in Heathrow for days while they waited for information on canceled or delayed flights.

Hundreds of services have been canceled at Britain’s airports in the last few days because of heavy snow and freezing conditions.
