Springfield, Illinois mayor died of self-inflicted gunshot

CHICAGO (BestGrowthStock) – The mayor of the Illinois capital city of Springfield apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, an autopsy concluded on Wednesday.

Mayor Timothy Davlin, 53, had been expected to appear in court on Tuesday in a matter related to his late cousin’s estate. Instead, he was found dead in his home.

An autopsy by the Sangamon County Coroner’s office concluded that the cause of death was “a contact gunshot wound to the chest, apparently self-inflicted,” the Illinois state police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The court appearance scheduled for Tuesday was involving a long-running court case over the $845,000 estate of Davlin’s cousin, which included a charity as a beneficiary, the Springfield Journal-Register reported.

The newspaper also reported the IRS had placed a lien on Davlin’s home.

Davlin, the mayor since 2003, had previously announced he was not running for another term. According to a biography posted on the city’s web site, he oversaw an increase in tourism and efforts to beautify the city of 113,000.
