TOKYO, Dec 7 (BestGrowthStock) – Sentiment among Japanese
manufacturers tumbled in December and their optimism is seen
vanishing in three months, a Reuters poll showed, underscoring
mounting uncertainty over an economy already struggling with
waning demand at home and abroad.

Companies complained about rises in raw materials prices and
difficulty in passing on costs to customers as a strong yen and
global slowdown hurt their profits, according to the monthly poll
taken Nov. 17-Dec. 2 of 400 big firms, of which 220 responded.

The bleak reading bodes ill for the Bank of Japan’s closely
watched quarterly tankan survey due out on Dec. 15, which will
keep the central bank under pressure to maintain its ultra loose
monetary policy to underpin the flagging economy.

Following is a table of indexes for key sectors and a
comparison with the Bank of Japan’s quarterly tankan survey:

The Reuters Tankan covers 200 large manufacturers and 200
non-manufacturers excluding the financial sector. A total of 220
responded to the poll, taken Nov. 17-Dec.2.

The index readings are derived by subtracting the percentage
of respondents who say conditions are poor from those who say
they are good. A negative reading means pessimists outnumber
optimists.
