The Benefits of CNG Vehicles

When most people think of natural gas, they think of it as a fuel source to help light their stoves or heat their homes. The truth is that natural gas is used in lots of different applications, including that of running an automobile! Because natural gas is widely considered clean, affordable available and domestic, it has become a very popular alternative fuel source to gasoline. In fact, there are over 15 million CNG vehicles on the road and CNG fueling station construction projects popping up all over the place. In this article, you’ll find some of the major benefits of driving a CNG vehicle.

Why Use Natural Gas?

One of the main reasons that CNG cars are gaining traction is that massive reserves or natural gas are being found. It can help countries to break their dependence on foreign oil and is also better for the environment. In fact, natural gas vehicles emit 1/4 of the greenhouse gases of other vehicles running off of diesel fuels.

Not only that, natural gas is also much more affordable than gasoline or diesel. On average, natural gas is $1.50 to $2 less per gasoline gallon equivalent. Because of this measure of affordability, many industries have started making the switch to CNG vehicles. Buses and garbage trucks are two of the big industries moving over to run on natural gas.

Lastly, the U.S. government has also put a push on trying to innovate with natural gas. In 2012, the U.S. Department of Energy had a $30 million competition trying to get businesses to find ways to harness natural gas as a safe, effective fuel for vehicles.

Benefits of Natural Gas

There are many benefits to using natural gas as fuel. Here are some of the big ones:

  • Natural Gas is more efficient than gasoline. While natural gas and gasoline powered vehicles get around the same amount of miles per gallon, the cost of natural gas is much less, making it a much more efficient purchase. In fact, you’ll usually save about half the cost of what you would pay purchasing gasoline. Because natural gas burns cleaner, you’ll also save some money on not having to get oil changes as frequently
  • Natural gas is a safer fuel. Because natural gas is lighter than air, if your vehicle gets in an accident the gas will dissipate. Flammable liquids like gasoline, however, will not.
