Thousands rally against Bakiyev in south Kyrgyzstan

OSH, Kyrgyzstan (BestGrowthStock) – Thousands of people gathered in Kyrgyzstan’s southern city of Osh Thursday to protest against deposed President Kurmanbek Bakiyev who was due to address a rally of followers in the same city.

A Reuters reporter at the scene said more than 2,000 anti-Bakiyev demonstrators whistled and waved banners reading “We do not want blood” as they waited for Bakiyev’s motorcade to arrive.

Bakiyev fled to his stronghold in southern Kyrgyzstan after troops fired on protesters on April 7 in an uprising, and has so far refused to leave the country or resign. At least 84 people were killed in the clashes in Bishkek.

Osh, Kyrgyzstan’s second-biggest city, is in the Ferghana Valley, a melting pot of ethnic and tribal tension in the heart of Central Asia that was the scene of violent clashes in the last days of the Soviet Union.
