Two Chicago firefighters dead after wall collapse

CHICAGO (BestGrowthStock) – Two Chicago firefighters were killed and more than a dozen injured when a wall of a brick building collapsed on the city’s South Side on Wednesday morning, officials said.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford confirmed the deaths. Firefighters are searching the rubble for people who may have taken shelter in the abandoned one-story structure.

“At this time we’re still taking the building apart to see if there were any homeless people in the building,” Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff told reporters.

“The fire had been knocked down and they were overhauling the hot spots,” Hoff said. “In wintertime people search for shelter so we always go in there to look for homeless or shelters and that’s what the (firefighters) were doing when the roof let loose.”

Wednesday marks the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Union Stock Yards fire that killed 21 firefighters.
