UK Stocks — Factors to watch on May 20

LONDON, May 20 (BestGrowthStock) – Britain’s FTSE 100 (.FTSE: ) index is seen gaining
on Thursday, recovering after steep losses in the previous session, with
commodity stocks likely to lend support, helped by firmer commodity prices.

The UK blue chip index looks set to rise 19 to 22 points, or as much as 0.4
percent, according to financial bookmakers, after tumbling 149.26 points, or 2.8
percent, to 5,158.08 on Wednesday following Germany’s move to ban naked short
sales of a range of financial assets.

The move triggered a sell-off in U.S. stocks (Read more about the stock market today. ) overnight, while Asian stocks
also fell, with Japan’s Nikkei average (.N225: ) down 1.5 percent.

Oil stood above $70 a barrel on Thursday, helped by a less-than-expected
rise in U.S. crude stocks, and copper led industrial metals higher in a
technical rebound.

In terms of domestic economic data, investors were waiting for retail sales
data, scheduled for release at 0830 GMT. Retail sales are forecast to have risen
by a muted 0.2 percent in April, half the rate of the previous month.

On the other side of the Atlantic, U.S. weekly jobless claims are due at
1230 GMT.
