UK Stocks — Factors to watch on Tuesday July 20

LONDON, July 20 (BestGrowthStock) – Britain’s FTSE 100 (.FTSE: ) index
is seen opening up 29-35 points, or 0.7 percent, higher on Tuesday, according to
financial bookmakers, rallying after falls in the previous session in tandem
with a turnaround on Wall Street and gains overnight in Asia.

The UK blue-chip index closed down 10.57 points, or 0.2 percent, on Monday
at 5,148.28, echoing an early retreat on Wall Street after weak U.S. housing

However, U.S. stocks (Read more about the stock market today. ) staged a late rally on Monday, with the Dow Jones
Industrials (.DJI: ) ending 0.6 percent higher, as a revival in optimism for the
second-quarter corporate earnings season offset the weak NAHB housing data.

U.S. earnings released after-hours from key tech firms International
Business Machines (IBM.N: ) and chip maker Texas Instruments (TXN.N: ) failed to

Asian stocks shrugged aside these disappointments, however, to also rise on
Tuesday as shares of resource firms and banks clawed back some of their recent

On the macro front, investors will have June’s public sector borrowing
numbers to digest at 0830 GMT, while the July CBI trends/orders report is due at
1000 GMT.

In the afternoon, U.S housing starts for June will released at 1230 GMT.

Another big batch of U.S. earnings will be the main focus on Tuesday, with
Goldman Sachs (GS.N: ) and Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (BK.N: ) continuing the
financials reporting season ahead of the Wall Street open, while tech giants
Apple (AAPL.O and Yahoo ) will report after the New York closing bell.

“If we are to get a break to the upside it could be that we would need some
spectacular earnings figures, which so far do not seem to be there,” said James
Hughes, market analyst at CMC Markets

“However a move to the downside could well be sparked by some majorly
disappointing US economic data or the re-emergence of the European sovereign
debt problem, and with recent downgrades to Ireland and Portugal this could be
closer than we think.”
