UPDATE 1-Areva to study building new Canadian reactor

* Areva to launch feasibility study for new reactor

* To design, build new unit if needed

* NB Power to operate any new facility

CALGARY, Alberta, July 8 (BestGrowthStock) – Areva SA (CEPFi.PA: )
on Thursday agreed to study the possibility of building a
second nuclear reactor in the eastern Canadian province of New
Brunswick.

Areva and the province have signed a letter of intent for
the study, to be followed by the design and construction of a
new light-water reactor, which would be the first in Canada if
built.

The province and the French reactor manufacturer said in a
release they would come up with a more detailed agreement by
year end.

New Brunswick, on Canada’s Atlantic Coast, says a reactor
would aid its strategy of creating an energy hub, exporting
clean power to elsewhere in Canada and the U.S. Northeast.
Areva may also create a clean-energy park and invest in
research and development in the province.

New Brunswick’s provincially owned utility, NB Power, would
operate the new facility. It also runs the 680 megawatt Point
Lepreau heavy-water reactor, which is currently being
refurbished.
