TORONTO, Dec 8 (BestGrowthStock) – Canadian housing starts rose
11.6 percent in November, mainly because of a surge in
apartment projects in the Toronto area, Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corp. (CMHC) said on Wednesday.

New home construction rose to a seasonally adjusted rate of
187,200 units from a downwardly revised 167,800 units in
October, CMHC data showed.

The number of starts in November beat the consensus
expectations of analysts who had called for 175,000 starts.

Starts of urban area multiples, such as condos, jumped 20.9
percent in November to 101,800 units. In Ontario, multiple unit
starts went up 29,900 units from October to November.

New construction of closely watched urban single-family
homes also rose, up 5.5 percent to 61,300 units.

Rural starts in November were estimated at an annual rate
of 24,100 units.
