UPDATE 1-Canada Q4 capacity use jumps most in 3 years

(Adds details)

OTTAWA, March 11 (BestGrowthStock) – Canadian industries ran at
70.9 percent of capacity in the fourth quarter of last year, up
from 68.7 percent in the previous quarter, for the first
substantial increase in three years, Statistics Canada said on
Thursday.

“The gain in the fourth quarter was the first sizable increase in overall capacity use since the first quarter of
2007,” Statscan said in a release.

Analysts surveyed by Reuters forecast an increase in
capacity use to 69.9 percent in the final quarter of 2009, when
the economy grew at a 5 percent annualized rate.

Capacity use by manufacturers was 69.7 percent, up from
67.7 percent in the third quarter but still well below the 73.5
percent rate a year earlier.

Only 13 of the 21 manufacturing industries posted higher
capacity use in the quarter, while all non-manufacturing
sectors rebounded.
