UPDATE 1-Dollar General says hiring 5,000 new workers

* New hires follow plan to open 600 stores this year

* Last year opened 500 new stores and hired 4,000

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 4 (BestGrowthStock) – Dollar General Corp
(DG.N: ), which has already announced plans to open 600 stores
this year, said on Thursday it will hire roughly 5,000 new
workers to staff those locations.

Dollar General, which prices most of its merchandise below
$10, has been gaining customers and growing sales amid the
economic downturn, allowing it to open new stores while other
retailers close up shop or scale back expansion plans.

Last year, the retailer hired 4,000 workers to staff 500
new stores. A spokeswoman for the company said the retailer has
not announced plans to close any stores this year.

The announcement comes a day after Wal-Mart Stores Inc
(WMT.N: ), the world’s biggest retailer, said it was cutting 300
jobs at its home office in Arkansas. That follows a move in
January to cut 12,700 jobs at its Sam’s Club warehouse
division, with roughly 10,000 of those jobs being outsourced to
a third-party company. In June, Wal-Mart said it would add more
than 22,000 jobs in its U.S. namesake stores.
