UPDATE 1-Duke Energy executive resigns after email scandal

* Says COO of its electric, gas business quits

* Resignation over emails published by Indianapolis Star

Dec 6 (BestGrowthStock) – Duke Energy (DUK.N: ) said the chief
operating officer of the utility’s electric and gas business,
James Turner, resigned following a controversy surrounding his
emails to an ex-commissioner in Indiana.

Daily Indianapolis Star recently published emails between
Turner and David Lott Hardy, who was the chairman of the
Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC).

“As a leader, I have a duty to exercise the highest level
of professionalism at all times in my communications. In
certain emails to a former commissioner in Indiana, I fell
short of this standard,” Turner said in a statement.

Turner served as a “senior leader” of Charlotte, North
Carolina-based Duke Energy since its merger with Cinergy in
2006.

In October, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels fired Hardy on
ethical grounds.

Shares of Duke Energy were down about 0.5 percent at $17.69
in midday trade on Monday on the New York Stock Exchange. They
are down about 3 percent in the last one month.
