SINGAPORE, April 30 (BestGrowthStock) – Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N: ) is
shutting down several operating units at its
refinery-petrochemical complexes in Singapore for a six-week
regular maintenance starting Friday, the company said.

ExxonMobil did not specify which units will be shut, but
industry sources said last year that its 296,000 barrel-per-day
(bpd) refinery, the smaller of its two facilities in the
city-state, will be taken down in May for a one-month
maintenance.

The maintenance at the Jurong Island Singapore facility,
planned since earlier last year, includes taking down in stages
both the plant’s crude distillation units (CDUs), the sources
had said. [ID:nSP493143]

Some other secondary units at the plant, which produces
mainly middle distillates such as gas oil and jet fuel, will
also be taken down in stages, they had said.

The shutdown comes as about 3.36 million bpd of refining
capacity in the Asia-Pacific region have been scheduled for
spring maintenance this year. The lower output and emerging
demand has lifted refining margins from year-lows, even though
the region is still faced with ample fuel supply.

This is the first major shutdown since the U.S. oil major
undertook a similar turnaround for the Jurong Island refinery
in 2006 and another round of maintenance for the mainland
facility in mid-2007.

ExxonMobil operates two refineries with a total capacity of
605,000 bpd and has a 900,000 tonne-per-year (tpy) ethylene
cracker in Singapore.

Work is also under way to add a new 1 million tpy ethylene
cracker complex in Jurong Island. Mechanical completion and
start-up activities of the new facilities will be in phases
beginning late 2010 through 2011, the company said.
