UPDATE 1-Hoyer: US healthcare options have pluses, minuses

(Adds quotes, details)

WASHINGTON, Jan 26 (BestGrowthStock) – Democrats are studying how
to proceed on the stalled drive to revamp the U.S. healthcare
system, and the options all have “pluses and minuses” and
include not passing a bill, House of Representatives Majority
Leader Steny Hoyer said on Tuesday.

Hoyer said he and fellow Democrats were considering their
next move on what has been President Barack Obama’s top
domestic legislative priority — after Democrats lost a Senate
seat last week that cost them their ability to clear Republican
procedural roadblocks in the Senate.

Hoyer, speaking at the National Press Club about his
party’s legislative goals for this election year, laid out the
options he saw on the healthcare issue.

“The first is to not pass a bill,” Hoyer said.

The Democratic leader said another option would be to try
to pass a scaled-backed measure “that will make modest
improvements for Americans, assuming Republicans want to work
with us.”

Or, Hoyer said, Congress could try to give final
congressional approval to the sweeping Senate bill and then
“both chambers pass fixes” to bridge differences on
affordability, funding and other matters.

“All of these choices have pluses and minuses,” Hoyer said,
adding Democrats would seek to decide what approach to take,
but have not set themselves any deadline.

Hoyer also said that Democrats will seek to preserve tax
cuts for the middle class that are set to expire at the end of
this election year.

In addition, Hoyer said he was hopeful lawmakers could find
common ground on the long-sought goal of reducing the country’s
dependence on foreign oil.
