UPDATE 1-Manufacturing helps boost Canada leading indicator

(Adds details)

OTTAWA, April 22 (BestGrowthStock) – Canada’s composite leading
indicator rose by 1.0 percent in March from February — the
10th consecutive monthly increase — on higher manufacturing
demand, Statistics Canada said on Thursday.

The increase was greater than the 0.8 percent boost
predicted by market operators. Statscan revised the February
gain up to 0.9 percent from an initial 0.8 percent.

Eight of the 10 components grew in March. New orders for
durable goods rose by 3.2 percent, the third advance in four
months, on a stronger performance by export industries.

The housing index rose by just 0.2 percent — the smallest
increase since the current upturn began a year ago — as
existing home sales retreated from record levels set in late
2009. Housing starts continued to increase.

The leading indicator is a five-month moving average. The
unsmoothed index — for March alone — increased by 0.5
percent.
