UPDATE 1-Mexico Jan consumer confidence rises unexpectedly

(Adds details on index, background)

MEXICO CITY, Feb 4 (BestGrowthStock) – Mexico’s consumer confidence
index (MXCONC=ECI: ) rose unexpectedly in January despite new tax
hikes that were expected to dampen a recovery in spending this
year, the national statistics agency said on Thursday.

The index rose to 82.1 from 80.1 in December.

Consumer confidence is still well below levels seen before
Mexico’s recession, which ended in the third quarter,
supporting the view that Mexico’s economy will post a slow
recovery.

Every component of the index improved from a month earlier,
with consumers saying they were more confident about the year
to come and more able to buy big items like furniture and
televisions.

Analysts had forecast the index would slip to 79.5.
