UPDATE 1-Mexico Oct retail sales rise 0.67 pct from Sept

(Adds context)

MEXICO CITY, Dec 20 (BestGrowthStock) – Mexican retail sales rose
0.67 percent in October but gains in the sector were smaller
than expected when compared to a year earlier, giving mixed
signals about the strength of Mexico’s recovery from
recession.

The monthly increase in retail sales (MXRTSL=ECI: ), reported
on Monday by the national statistics agency, left October sales
4.4 percent higher than they were a year earlier (MXRSLY=ECI: ).

Analysts surveyed by Reuters had expected sales to rise 4.6
percent compared to October 2009.

Mexico is limping back from a 6.1 percent economic
contraction in 2009. Consumer spending is expected to
compensate for slowing growth in factory exports but a bad job
market could hamper the recovery.

Mexico’s jobless rate was stuck at 5.7 percent in October,
its highest level since January.
