UPDATE 1-US can handle Toyota throttle review – LaHood

* New complaints received about throttles

* US transport secretary to call Toyota chair

WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (BestGrowthStock) – U.S. regulators have the
resources and expertise to conduct a thorough review of
consumer complaints regarding unintended acceleration in Toyota
Motor Corp (7203.T: ) vehicles focusing on electronic throttles,
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said on Wednesday.

“It’s not so complex that we can’t figure it out,” LaHood
told reporters. “We have the resources to do this and we’re
going to do it.”

LaHood said the government has received new complaints
recently about unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles and
the Japanese automaker is cooperating.

The government had for years investigated complaints about
electronic throttles and unintended acceleration in Toyota and
Lexus vehicles without finding a defect.

Pressure for a new probe follows Toyota’s recall in January
of 2.4 million vehicles for an accelerator pedal defect. LaHood
said his agency had to pressure Toyota into taking that
action.

LaHood said he plans to call Toyota President Akio Toyoda,
the grandson of the company’s founder, soon to ensure that
Toyota understands the Obama administration is serious about
ongoing investigations.
